Back in 1999, while the world was still in awe at what was being done on the Nintendo 64, Rare released a little space game called Jet Force Gemini. While some hated this game for their own sour reasons, many loved it for it’s unique characters, levels, outstanding lighting effects, replay value, music, and of course the bug-squashing fun. Rare, not as pleased with the sales of this game (they were comparing it to GoldenEye) did not make a sequel; all to the dismay of the JFG fans. Then, out of nowhere, Rare announces a final N64 game right before E3 2000. Naturally this shocked the media because the N64 was thought to have already run its course. The release date of this new game, Dinosaur Planet, which appeared to be a Zelda-esque space adventure/shooter, kept slipping, and finally it disappeared. Had Rare abandoned the game? Nope… At E3 2001 Rare shocks the media again. Not only have they brought back Dinosaur Planet, but it has been given a refreshing facelift. Now, the once Sabre and Krystal adventure has become the next episode in the StarFox franchise. StarFox Adventures: Dinosaur Planet was born. The Story: SFA:DP begins eight long years after the defeat of Andross in StarFox 64. Fox McCloud, local hero, heads to the once peaceful world of Dinosaur Planet after hearing of the invasion of General Scales, a ruthless ruler who has turned the once tranquil world into chaos. Fox has to overthrow General Scales, and rescue the mysterious character (ie: seductive female role) by the name of Krystal, who has been abducted by an ancient force known as Krazoa. It’s worth mentioning that SFA:DP will feature tons of in-game speech, and a beautifully composed soundtrack with breathtaking visuals that only the GameCube hardware is capable of. You will also take to the sky in your trusty Arwing in some levels. The look of the space levels is very similar to that N64 version, with vast improvements in graphical quality, naturally. With a developer like Rare at the wheel, it's hard to think that SFA will be anything but a drive-by success. With such a huge adventure in such a vast world, and all the old Star Fox gang included, it would be silly to think that this game won’t be amazing. The new release date has been set at March 2001.
