The Nintendo Promotional Mini-CD

Imagine my surprise when early Saturday evening I open my mail and find a promotional CD from Nintendo about the upcoming release of GameCube. Upon opening the package, cleverly constructed to resemble that of an actual GameCube, I withdrew the three and an eighth inch CD. Eagerly awaiting the movies and screenshots I expected, my computer slowly…slowly…slowly downloaded the QuickTime5 Upgrade. Very slowly. About half an hour later I was greeted by the stylish Flash 5 layout. Free to look around at my own pace, I first checked out the technical stats. As always, I was amazed at the abilities of this new machine. The speed of this thing is far beyond anything else.

Past the Wireless WaveBird, Memory Cards, GBA/GC Adapting, and online capabilities, I found the games. Eleven games, from Luigi’s Mansion to StarFox Adventures: Dinosaur Planet and Wave Race: Blue Storm, from Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 to Madden NFL 2002 and XG3 Extreme G Racing. Each with a handful of brand new screenshots and a one minute or so long movie, all of these games are looking tempting. Luigi’s Mansion, although the video didn’t show a lot, is being portrayed as a comic tale of scary rooms and repetition. SF:DP appears to be a mix between Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Jet Force Gemini, and of course a little of the original StarFox. XG3 is packed with tons of new tracks, awesome lighting effects, new environments, and some cool weather effects. Super Smash Bros is back and bigger and better than ever, with Mario, DK, Link, Samus, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox, Pikachu, Captain Falcon, Ness, Ice Climber, Peach, Koopa, and Sheik, you can’ go wrong with this multiplayer fighter. Along with the game videos and screens, a nice selection of GameCube wallpaper was tagged onto the demo CD as well. We’ll have those up for you soon. (Editors Note: They are now ready for download)

As the release date of the Nintendo GameCube approaches, it’s hard not to notice the amazing games that will soon be available to us. The technology that goes to make video games has changed drastically over the years and it seems the Nintendo is always at the higher end of the gaming spectrum. "The development of Nintendo GameCube was based on one simple goal: to create the perfect game system." It may not be perfect, but it’s going to be hard to beat. As Miyamoto says, "The GameCube was born to play!"
