Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

INTRODUCTION:
Meet Link in his first 3-D adventure in Hyrule Kingdom and its surrounding areas. Our Kokiri friend gets a variety of new moves and weapons as he travels through time to defeat Ganondorf, the evil King who has taken over Hyrule. With the help of Sheik, a local native, and his melodic ocarina Link is ready for anything.

FEATURES:

  • 1 player
  • Giant Overworld
  • 6 temples
  • Z-Targeting
  • Real-Time Lighting

    CHARACTERS:

  • Link
  • Princess Zelda
  • Ganondorf
  • Sheik
  • 6 Sages

    OVERALL GAMEPLAY:
The game runs very smoothly: no slowing of the frame rate, the cut scenes aren’t a problem, and no loading stalls. Link is very easy to maneuver and one will quickly learn how to use his fighting moves. The setup of the game makes it very easy to take things out of your inventory and use them. One of the new features is "Z-Targeting", a way to lock on to your opponent while fighting to avoid odd and obscure camera angels. This also allows Link to flip backwards or to the side to avoid enemy hits.

    GRAPHICS:
As always, Miyamoto and his team bring the game to life. The amazing cut scenes really add emotion and depth to the game. At a distance, textures may get blurry and there is a little fog on the horizon, but for a game released this early on the N64, Miyamoto did very well and paid close attention to detail. One extraordinary event that takes place every ten minutes is the shift from day to night and back to day. The sun sets, the sky becomes a majestic plethora of color, and settles into night. The sun even produces a lens flare when you look directly at it.

    SOUND:
Keeping in line with the Zelda games of the past, this game features a nice soundtrack of fairy-like songs, deep sad songs, and catchy melodies that will get caught in the back of your mind. The music is never awkward or out of place, it sets a nice tone to the environments and helps to establish depth and emotion.

    REPLAY VALUE:
Not only is this game great the first time, but playing it again is also fun. I found that after a while searching for the stones becomes tedious, and the Water Temple makes me cringe, but for the overall experience of reliving the game, this one makes it very fun. There are so many things to do that aren’t necessary to complete the game, such as trade for the Biggoran’s Sword and find all of the Gold Skulltulas that you won’t be sorry you played it again.

    COMMENTS:
This is possibly my favorite of any N64 game. I love the music, the graphics, and the characters. The story line is well developed and it’s fun to play. The new Z-Targeting is really great and it raises the bar of RPG fighting games.
