Wave Race: Blue Storm

INTRODUCTION:
Wave Race 64 was possibly the best racing game to hit the N64. Naturally, its successor, Wave Race: Blue Storm, is nothing but spectacular. As the first racing game to appear on Nintendo GameCube, WR:BS will have to defend it’s title against all of the other racing games to follow in the upcoming years. Developed by NST, Blue Storm will have no trouble staying ahead of the competition for years to come.

FEATURES:

  • New turbo boost
  • Dynamic water
  • Five different modes of play (Championship, Time Attack, Stunt, Multiplayer, Free Roam, and Tutorial)
  • Eight characters with ranging features for novice to expert
  • Customize weather forecast (calm, foggy, rainy, storm) and go up against one to nine foot waves
  • Random weather conditions affect water level to reveal unique shortcuts and new track layouts
  • Race against your own ghost in Time Attack to compete for top lap times
    Four-player split-screen multiplayer
  • Built in Rumble Pak responds to waves
30 frames per second game-play and multiplayer mode

    OVERALL GAMEPLAY:
Putting it all together goes like peas in a pod. The configuration is excellent and very well designed. Nothing in the game seems out of place at all. The sound, the graphics and the control fit like a glove!

The controls are very hard to get used to, but once you do they are second nature. The GameCube version seems a little more advanced, possibly because of the wakes and waves that bump into you as you’re turning, but you really can't gripe about that though-- that's just Nintendo trying to be even more realistic. It could be said that the control is hard to get used to because the game is too realistic, but we won’t go there.

    GRAPHICS:
Probably the greatest attribute to the game is the graphics. The graphics are virtually flawless. When you race water sprays out from behind the Jet Ski, streaks of water being cut is perfectly set as very real. When you go off of a jump water droplets splash onto the camera lens for a brief moment... It’s like an actual jet ski race.

The texture of the game is fantastic also, it displays every little detail you could possibly think of ranging from the boards in the decks, water ripples, spots on the dolphins and even the character's face. Seagulls flock in the sky and gorgeous clouds dwell over a beautiful blue horizon- it kind of makes you wish you lived there!

    SOUND:
Another positive addition to the game is the sound. I don't have any complaints here, except for the characters. Their cries of excitement can get annoying after awhile, especially in the free ride mode where you can cruise around for hours.

The music in the game is up-beat and isn’t tired and repetitive after a few minutes. The hum of the Jet Ski sounds within range and the water splashes are accurate and crystal clear.

    REPLAY VALUE:
I shouldn't have to tell you that this game is fun! Wave Race: Blue Storm is madly entertaining! You can play it for hours and not get sick of it.

In Wave Race there are a ton of features and a great 2-4 player multiplayer mode that can keep your attention for hours. So as you can see, Wave Race: Blue Storm is a good game to play if you're looking to have some fun.
