Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requim
INTRODUCTION:
Until yesterday the game Eternal Darkness, to me, was simply a reocurring video game name. I thought it was just some game
about knights, kinda like Hexen. I knew it was one of the few Mature games planned for the GameCube but when I decided to
actually take a look at the game boy was I in for a suprise. Little did I realize how this game has been estimated from 20-60
hours of gameplay for one path nor did I realize how innovative this game is, dubbed in the genre 'psychological thriller'.
If you didn't give this game a look at all I highly HIGHLY reconmend you give this preview a look. I imagine you will be as
suprised or more so than I.
FEATURES:
1 player.
12 differant characters to choose from spanning 2000 years.
3 differant paths to choose from, each of which will effect the game.
Amazing lighting effects.
Ability to have 20 characters on screen at a time.
500+ polygon characters 300+ polygon enemies.
20-60 hours of gameplay for each path.
Unique magic system that makes it so you make the spells.
A new feature called the insanity meter. Which will make you the player not know the difference
between what is real in the game and what is not.
STORY SO FAR:
Little is known about the story so far but what is known is that before humans came on the earth there was an ancient species
that went dorment during the ice ages waiting for the time to reclaim the earth. When the game starts you are a young woman
looking through her recently deceased grandfather's house when she finds a book she is drawn into a vision of ancient times.
This is where the epic begins but little is known story wise after that point.
GRAPHICS AND SOUND:
The graphics in the game are, for lack of a better word, phenomnal. The real time lighting and high polygon count are just
the beginning. Everything is made with such precision a true feel of realism is given fufilling exactly what Silicon Knights
is trying to do put features of horror into a video game to make you scared. Make it so you need to take a breath everyonce
and a while. In this game Zombie's are just strewn out in the open like games like Resident Evil but they are more hidden
made to come from where you least expect. The original camara design from the N64 in this game was harsh and sometimes made
gameplay difficult. But it has been said that a ton of time has been spent fixing this problem and now you have the best
possible camara position for a game like this with seemingless transistions. As for cutscenes this game is said to contain
1 hour and this hour is not supposed to take away from the total gameplay experience listed above. And as seen in the pictures
below which are from the Silicon Knights page the graphics in the cutscenes and in gameplay are phenomenal. All of the
below pictures are taken directly from the GameCube. As for sound I cannot really comment yet except I do know that it is made
to fit the game perfectly. All players will talk and in the language that fits their time span and location. EX) Roman soldier
will speak Roman.
INNOVATIVE FEATURES:
There are a ton of innovative features in this game but the two biggest is the ability to create spells and the insanity meter.
As for creating spells there are a variety of differant spells. You can mix them together to create unique effects. How this
truly works is not yet known but it seems as it will be a very unique addition. The insanity meter is what really got me
psyched about this game. The insanity meter is a meter that rises whenever you see a monster that you do not fight. It goes
down or does not increase when y ou do because you are fighting your insanity and making it real by facing it. When the insanity
meter gets full a variety of differant things will happen some will be blantely obvious others will not. Some of the known
things that will happen are you will become dismembered, or a ton of monsters will come out and surround you or even something
like you will pick up an item and when you go into your items to see your new item all of your items will be gone but when you
take a second look they all return like nothing ever happened. That is the power of the insanity meter.
OUTLOOK:
I cannot wait for this game to be released. When Nintendo revealed that this game was delayed at that time I was like "Too
bad for everyone that wanted this game" now I feel the power of what i said upon myself as I get more anxious to play this game.
Though this game cannot truly be evaluated until it is released in now April we will keep you up to date with any information
as it is revealed. Check out the screens below to get a taste of what you are instore for!
