Just after the unveiling of the PlayStation 2 Nintendo confirmed that they were developing a more advanced system, but they did not provide any specifics at that time.

Codenamed Dolphin, after conflict with NOA a compromise was made and the system was given the name GameCube. The first official announcement of it's existence was at the press confrence prior to E3 in 1999. Nintendo kept its silence on the subject for more than a year and Nintendo demonstrated the machine at GameCube in 2000.

At the unveiling Nintendo showed demos for:

  • Meowth's Party
  • Wave Race
  • Metroid Prime
  • Luigi's Mansion
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron 2

  • And at E3 2001 Nintendo stole the show again with unveiling playable versions of some of the earlier demos at Space World and also playable versions of Star Fox Adventures: Dinosaur Planet and Super Smash Bros: Melee. An official release date of the system has been set at Nov. 5th 2001 just 3 days before Microsoft's X-Box.
